Accessing your accounts when traveling abroad

Many things have changed over the years, such as getting ready to travel. Years ago before you went out of town you would go to your financial institution to make sure you had enough cash and checks with you to get you through the trip. And remember Traveler’s Checks? Although they are still used today, many folks continue to use their preferred method of payment while they travel – a debit or credit card.

Whether you’re out of town for a fun getaway, traveling for business or deployed, if you’re going to be out of town for long, it’s important that you’re able to get to your money and your bank account safety, securely, and timely. Those bills still need to be paid! As your financial institution, we’re here to help you accomplish this.

With services such as online banking and ATMs, you can achieve this. But before you head out of town, there are a couple of things you should know.

It’s a good idea to let your financial institution know you’re taking a trip or being deployed. You will want to include where you’re going and how long you’re planning to be there. A new location is a red flag for possible fraudulent activity. Knowing the location will help alleviate any unnecessary hold or declines on any debit and credit card transactions that your institution may impose as a security measure.

When traveling internationally and depending on your destination, it’s important you are aware that you may not be able to access your financial institution’s website from certain international locations. This is generally underdeveloped countries with a high incidence of cyber-related crimes. However, you can still access online banking by bypassing the website and going directly to your online banking sign-in page, so be sure you have that direct access link before you leave on your trip.

When you contact your financial institution, be sure to let them know where you’re going and the customer service representative should provide you with all the information you will need to access your account abroad along with a direct link to a secure messenger system in case you need to contact your financial institution with any questions while you’re away.

At CDC Federal Credit Union, we want to do our best so you have a safe and hassle-free trip or deployment.
